Young people are now required to make choices early in life which require a degree of financial knowledge and skill that most don't have the opportunity to learn at school. The Retirement Commission is therefore partnering with others to look at how we can offer new approaches to help young people adapt to the major changes that have occurred over the past few decades.
The Commission has a strong focus on youth education and is a founding sponsor and supporter of the Enterprise New Zealand Trust's financial education programme "Pathways to Financial Literacy".
The Commission is also working with the Ministry of Education and other educational organisations with interest in curriculum issues to imbed financial literacy into the New Zealand school curriculum.
Called the Personal Financial Education in Schools Project, the Commission has employed Lester Taylor to project manage this work with teachers, educationalists, and other interested parties to develop an advisory group to help establish, guide and support the project. For more information contact Lester Taylor at lester.taylor@retirement.org.nz or download the Personal Financial Education in Schools Project flyer.
