Retirement Commissioner Diana Crossan today welcomed the announcement of the regulations and Code of Practice, which will bring the Retirement Villages Act fully into effect over the next year.
“This is an important step in consumer protection for New Zealanders who live in retirement villages,” Ms Crossan said after the Minister for Building Issues, Clayton Cosgrove, announced the implementation detail.
Ms Crossan said that it was important to ensure that the right balance was struck between regulation and consumer protection.
The Retirement Commission has a role to monitor the implementation and effect of the Act.
The Retirement Commissioner is also responsible for maintaining a list of disputes panel members. Ms Crossan recently announced a list of approved individuals that operators choose from to make up a disputes panel. These will be listed on the Retirement Commission’s website www.retirement.org.nz from 1 October – the date that the Disputes Regulations come into effect.
Information on retirement village issues can be found on the Retirement Commission’s website www.retirement.org.nz.
People thinking about buying into retirement villages can find information to help their decision making on the 60plus section of the Retirement Commissioner’s free, independent, personal finance site www.sorted.org.nz.
