Tauranga Girls’ student has fnancial future Sorted

16 February 2006

A former student of Tauranga Girls’ College looks set to be financially literate for life after achieving top marks in a NZQA-recognised exam on financial literacy, sponsored by the Retirement Commission and run by the Enterprise New Zealand Trust.

Hannah Elgie, who was a year 13 student last year and is to start at Auckland University next month, received an impressive 97 percent and was named New Zealand’s top student in the financial literacy exam. She also achieved full marks in the Taxation and Student Loans question sponsored by Inland Revenue.

Hannah was awarded her prizes at Tauranga Girls’ on February 13 by Enterprise New Zealand Trust (ENZT) financial education national director Lyn Morris and Tauranga City Councillor and ENZT supporters’ council member Anne Pankhurst.

Hannah’s prizes include $250 for the Retirement Commission top student of the year award, $100 for the IR tax and loans question and a further $100 given to all students gaining over 90 percent.

Lyn Morris said 97 percent was a fantastic mark and Hannah should be very proud of her achievement. Only 11 students in the country received more than 90 percent in the exam.

Developed by the ENZT and sponsored by the Retirement Commission, the 60 hour modularised programme teaches students about personal financial management. The course is worth ten credit equivalents, and students can use the course towards Level 2 NZQA.

The programme is the main way in which secondary students have access to financial education. Over 100 schools have adopted the programme, which covers various topics from saving to credit and borrowing to taxation, banking and budgeting.
