Operators

As the operator of the village providing what you've promised your residents - whether as developer, owner or manager - you've also got other legal obligations. This is where you can find an overview of your obligations under the Retirement Villages Act from 1 October 2006. There's also other general consumer law such as the Fair Trading Act and the Consumer Guarantees Act, as well as other legislation to comply with. This all requires legal and other professional advice.

For information on the implementation of the Act, go to the Department of Building and Housing. For information on registration and statutory supervisors, go to the Companies Office.

This section has general information about:

  • Your obligations
Things you need to do now to comply with the Retirement Villages Act and more to prepare. There's an outline here with more detail in the Guide to the Act.
  • Handling complaints
All operators must have a complaints facility in place now. There are certain requirements for complaints procedures and decisions as well as for dealing with formal disputes.
