Sorted is the Commission for Financial Literacy and Retirement Income's personal financial education programme designed to help New Zealanders manage their personal finances throughout life.
Case study key sections:
In 2001 the Commission decided to shift the focus of its education programme from financial planning for retirement to financial skills throughout life so that people are better prepared for retirement.
This was based on the premise that the better an individual’s financial literacy and engagement throughout life, the greater their likelihood of being financially prepared in retirement. This thinking was broadly endorsed by international studies. (Source: Janice C Wright: How Effective is Financial Literacy in Changing Financial Behaviour, November 2001)
As a result, a new brand for the public education programme was developed with the intention that it remove the emphasis from the ‘R’ word (retirement), and attract audiences that had been previously hard to reach. It was agreed that the brand had to:
- Convey the positive concept of ‘financial fitness for life’.
- Be relevant to everyone, no matter what their age or stage of life.
- Work as a website URL.
- Have the potential to become an iconic, action oriented part of New Zealand’s culture.
The result was www.sorted.org.nz
Today, sorted.org.nz has many interactive calculators and tools and information covering the financial situations most New Zealanders face. Sorted users can save their calculator results to My Sorted – their own confidential, secure online account. Sorted.org.nz also shares news and updates on ways to help manage money through a blog, Facebook and Twitter.
In addition, sorted.org.nz has expanded beyond the website and now includes a wider programme of activity including
booklets and
seminars.
Sorted.org.nz's content and tools are syndicated through websites and portals including www.trademe.co.nz, www.stuff.co.nz and www.nzherald.co.nz.
